Turkey Trotting on Turkey Day

There is an age old question that circulates around the brilliant intellects of knuckleheads between the ages of 18-28. How many turkeys do you think you could take in a fight? Now, there are plenty of stipulations that come with this monumental query. Do you have a weapon? Are they coming at you one at a time or all at once? Are they in the trees? Now, most philosophers follow the “gentlemen's agreement” frame of thought. This states that the fighter is bare handed, the turkeys come at you together, and you are on neutral ground. After hours of deliberation I have concluded that the third turkey would take me down. I could catch one, maybe use it to fend off another, but the third could fly above me and end the contest.

What these great philosophers have yet to consider is, could you beat a turkey in a race? To the untrained eye the turkey is a large slow bird, bound to waddling and clumsy flying. Get this though, turkeys can run at 25 miles an hour! And they can FLY at 55 miles an hour! I don't know about you, but I am getting smoked, cooked, and roasted by this turkey in any race less than a 5k. There’s no way a turkey can hold 55 mile an hour pace for 3 miles right? RIGHT?!

The revelation the great turkey philosophers have agreed upon is to refrain from judgements based on appearance. What they realized is that the lack of judgement must go further than “don’t judge a book by its cover.” It really means don’t judge yourself based on physical attributes. We may have preconceived notions about a turkey’s abilities because of how they look, but as the philosophers have shown, turkeys will blow you out of the water. So be a turkey. No matter what you look like know that you have the potential to achieve all the goals you set for yourself.

This weird turkey fantasy stemmed from racing the turkey trot this year. I ran the 5k with my younger cousin, and he SMASHED his PR. His potential is astronomical. It was inspiration to watch him dig deep and bust out a finishing kick that I could barely keep up with! His inspirational performance paired with the turkey costumes throughout the race made me interested in a turkey’s race potential. Doing some research showed me that turkey’s are fast as anything, and that I was underestimating them.

So this holiday season, don’t underestimate yourself. Eat the physical turkey so you can find the metaphorical one within and start flying!

... at 55 miles an hour… wow… that still blows my mind…
